June 2010 - Hot destinations with Brits abroad

Migration may be a topical subject of political debate, especially in the UK, but it is nothing new. People have been jumping ship from one country to another for hundreds of years. Although the UK opens its gates to thousands of migrants every year – there were 565,000 in 2005 mostly from Africa and Asia – thousands of Briton also leave the UK’s fair shores for better lives, in the most part in Australia, Spain, France and the US.

In 2005, 380,000 Brits emigrated so you can see this is not a one-way phenomenon. The same year, 18,220 Britons arrived in the Land Down under in search of better weather and a more relaxed way of life. Immigrants from the UK, were the third biggest group after Asia and Oceania.

It’s no wonder why Australia is so popular. Being an old colony of Britain there are many similarities, particularly in architecture and politics. However, life is largely lived outdoors. The biggest draw card of Australia has got to be the weather. Add over 7,000 beaches, tropical rainforests, cultured and chic cities and a high standard of living and you have one very attractive package. You might have to swap Marmite for Vegemite and football for Aussie Rules, but you will be surprised at how easily you can fit in.

The US receives at least one million legal immigrants each year. The biggest migration flows into America come from Mexico, China, India and the Philippines. However, many Britons also choose to live a life in the so-called Land of the Free. The British started mass-migration to the US in the 17th century, and although the flow has been decreasing in strength ever since the late 18th century, it is still a popular destination, especially for people looking for greater work opportunities and to study.

The long history as well as very strong political and economic ties means the US and the UK also have much in common. Be prepared for longer working hours and less holiday and the difference in governance such as Federal and State laws can be rather confusing, but there are more work opportunities, universities are simply amazing and houses are much more affordable.
